Portrait of a Barman with a Sheep
oil in canvas
70 x 60 cm, unframed
83 x 74 cm, framed
The second portrait in the series of homages to old masters: the painting shows the owner of the internationally renowned cocktail bar Das Schwarze Schaf in Bamberg as a nobleman from the early 17th century. The inspiration for this work came from a painting by an unknown Ligurian painter from around 1630. The „Portrait of a Nobleman with a Dog“ shows a young man in a doublet embroidered with gold thread and Genoese lace with a proud dog, a Bracco Italiano. This painting had a strong influence on my professional career as an art historian, as I was able to study it while working for an art dealer and help prepare it for auction at the Dorotheum in Vienna. The translation into the present day with Sven Goller and his black sheep requires a large portion of humor from the art expert, but would like to elicit a smile from every viewer.
