La Bella Anna
part of the ‚Imperfections‘ series*
oil on canvas
80 x 80 cm, unframed
available as a limited art print
Inspired by Titian’s marvellous work „La Bella“ (1536-1538), the lady depicted here looks directly and sharply into the viewer’s eyes. The richly ornamented dress, the graceful posture and poise of „Bella Anna“ are in deliberate contradiction to the smeared lipstick. Make-up is expected to be perfectly applied. However, this woman is shown before the removal of the mishap that happens to every woman in everyday life, but is never seen publicly – whether digitally or in paintings. The undeniable beauty of the subject intends to stimulate reflection on exaggerated perfectionism and exaggerated ideals of beauty in the depiction of femininity.
The painting is framed as an example for the whole series.
*The Imperfections series shows the aesthetics of the supposedly unsightly: the baroque splendor of the protagonists staged is in deliberate contradiction to the humorous use of elements or situations from our contemporary everyday life – united in a harmonious total work of art.
