Woman with a Red Turban (Self-Portrait! )
oil on canvas
40 x 30 cm, unframed
available as a limited art print
The painting leads a new series of tributes to important artists who have guided me in my artistic journey as role models and in my studies of art history in London. This is a self-portrait and a tribute to Jan van Eyck, one of the pioneers of oil painting in the 15th century (see Jan van Eyck, Portrait of a Man (Self Portrait?), 1433, National Gallery London). Considered by some experts to be one of the first self-portraits by an artist, van Eyck’s fascinating work is a brilliant display of the newfound self-confidence of a new generation of artists. As a woman and young mother, it takes a lot of self-confidence to assert yourself in the art scene, especially in portrait painting, the supreme discipline: Here we go!
